A particularly amusing imitation
Lot 1393
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 1.97 g, 3 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Thessalonica, irregular mint, after 320. CИIZИИ-VИZ ИИИC Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. ИИΟИИΟИИΤΙИИΜИΟИИ / ΤZΤ around wreath containing VT / XX in two lines. Slightly rough and with minor weakness, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of a British specialist of Roman coins.

This coin appears to copy one of several Thessalonica emissions from 320-324, but with a fantasy mint mark. Particularly amusing are the four letters placed completely out of place within the meticulously crafted laurel wreath.
